Introduction to Venice (optional tour)                                                                                                                            16:00 - 18:00

This two-hour will introduce you to Venice's glorious past under the Serenissima Republic, and will also enable you to "get your bearings" in the historical centre. Your official guide will accompagny you into St-Mark's Square - the heart and soul of the city - and will explain its fascinating history. Napoleon in fact called the square "The Most Beautiful Drawing-Room in the World", an opinion shared by all visitors today!

You will see: the Clock Tower, built in the late 15th century, and restored very recently; the Bell Tower which crumbled to the ground in 902 and was rebuilt identically; the imposing facade of the splendid byzantine Basilica of St-Mark', with its stunning gold mosaics; the exterior of the Doge's Palace - dating back to the 14th century with its lovely pink-dued Gothic windows, which was the seat of the Venetian power for centuries. The tour will then continue on towards the Rialto Bridge, lined with shops, which was built in the 16th century and for nearly three hundred years, remained the only means of crossing the Grand Canal on foot.

Welcome Cocktail & Walking Dinner - Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal                                                                          19:00 - 22:30

A unique opportunity to meet with fellow industry professionals in the beautiful settings of the historical Ridotto Ballroom. IGI delegates are invited for a surprise visit in the city to be followed by a Cocktail Reception and Walking Dinner to officially ‘kick off’ the IGI 60th Anniversary celebrations in style.

During one hour, the particpants will have the chance to meet the associate members at their booth, and to share informal breakfast together. This year after the keynote presentation an IGI wallcoverings fashion show will be organised. The chance for everyone to vote for their favorite collections.

Excursion to the Island of Murano (optional tour)                                                                                                           15:00 - 18:00

Your hostess will accompany you by boat to the island of Murano where you will witness first-hand the dazzling magic of glass-making at its highest level.   Centuries ago, Venetians learned this art from the Egyptians and Phoenicians and jealously guarded these secrets so they would not fall into the hands of foreigners.

The glass factory you will visit today actually produces a part of the glass exposed in its showrooms, and the demonstration you will attend in their furnace room will be conducted by one of the factory’s master glass blowers.  His expert hands will transform in front of your eyes , a piece of glass into a spectacular vase, with the methodology used centuries ago.  This methodology is now protected by the trademark “Made in Murano”.

Following this demonstration, you will visit the factory’s elegant show rooms.  There is glass here for every taste, from modern to classical, from glasses to chandeliers, to costume jewellery.

Pizza Sampling Dinner - Cantina Canaletto                                                                                                                 19:00 - 23:00

In the country where pizza was invented, a pizza sampling dinner is mandatory!

Dinner will begin with an appetizer of different cold cuts from Parma, including the famous prosciutto crudo, served with home-made rosemary focaccia.  This will be followed by an assortment of pizzas, one better than the other!

Monday 28 June 2010

Partner/Spouse Programme - 18th Century Venice                                                                                                       09:00 - 15:00

An official guide will meet you at the hotel and will accompany you on foot through the St. Mark and Dorsoduro districts.   You will pass through San Samuele, the parish where Giacomo Casanova was born, baptized and raised, and will cross the wooden Accademia Bridge where you will have dazzling views of the Grand Canal. You will then walk through the winding streets of Dorsoduro until you reach Ca’ Rezzonico, a palace once owned by the English poet Robert Browning, and now home to Venice’s 18th century museum. Inside, the guide will show you the extraordinary paintings by such Venetian painters as Guardi and Longhi, who actually “chronicled” 18th century Venice.

You will then have lunch in a typical “trattoria” nearby. After lunch your guide will accompany you to an authentic mask laboratory where you will learn mask decoration techniques which you will immediately put into practice:  you will in fact be given an apron, paint, paint-brushes, a basin of water, and a papier-mâché mask which you will then decorate, using your hidden, artistic talents! This mask will be yours to keep as a souvenir of your day!

After your mask decoration “achievement”, your guide will accompany you to a nearby Venetian palace, home to a Venetian aristocratic family for centuries, where you will be shown around and then offered refreshments in the extraordinary gardens.
